When the action-adventure game Ghost of Tsushima first launched on PlayStation 4 in 2020 it was pretty spectacular. The Assassin’s Creed-like title from Infamous developer Sucker Punch, set during the first Mongol invasion of Japan in 1274, delivered a wonderful take on a tried and true formula. Four years later, the game finally made its way to PC this May, giving a whole new audience a chance to get their hands on the game. In the two months Ghosts of Tsushima has been out on Steam, players have had mixed reactions, and shared them in over 30,000 reviews.

Ghost of Tsushima had a bit of trouble when it first launched on Steam thanks to a new push from Sony to integrate PC players into the PlayStation ecosystem. The Steam version of the game requires players to create a PlayStation Network account in order to enjoy the multiplayer DLC, Legends, though you can play the single-player story without a PSN account. One of the biggest criticisms of this policy is that it makes the multiplayer unplayable for the long list of countries in which PSN is not available. If you read through the negative reviews on Ghost of Tsushima’s Steam page, you will find that the policy is still a source of much contention, with many players giving bad reviews in protest . There are also a few negative responses that are more focused on the actual game experience, with some reviewers calling it a boring Assassin’s Creed reskin. Ghost of Tsushima is centered around the same pillars of combat, stealth, and exploration that the Ubisoft franchise is. If that’s not your thing then you probably won’t like Ghost of Tsushima.

There are many Steam players, however, who really love Sucker Punch’s take on the Assassin’s Creed formula. A lot of positive reviews are quick to call this the best Assassin’s Creed game ever made. That is in part because of the story and cast of characters Sucker Punch created in Ghost of Tsushima, with many finding a compelling figure in protagonist Jin. Though I’d say the gorgeous world of Tsushima is doing a lot of the heavy lifting. In a game where so much of your time is spent wandering around on foot or horseback, you’d be hard l-pressed to find a prettier setting than the titular island in Ghost of Tsushima. The game was already stunning to look at on PlayStation but the added power of a good PC just makes it jaw-dropping. That beauty is why a lot of positive reviews also joke about this just being a screenshot machine.

One thing that really shouldn’t surprise anybody at this point is how many reviews on Ghost of Tsushima’s Steam page mention Bloodborne. The 2015 soulslike from FromSoftware is PC gamers’ white whale, in that they really just want the game to be released on Steam. Of course, this has never happened in the decade since the game’s release, and not even the PlayStation 5 has gotten an updated version. But until such time as Bloodborne does come to PC—keep the hope alive people—here is what players are saying about Ghost of Tsushima’s PC release.
